3 great reasons to do the Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean RoadLong haul travelling is a series of wonderful dilemmas – surfing or snoozing; sightseeing or partying; the comfort of a resort or paths less travelled?
The Great Ocean Road covers a lot of bases, sometimes simultaneously! It’s relaxing, but you cover a lot of ground. It’s historical, but modern and vibrant; it’s scenic, but not sleepy; and that open road freeing but user-friendly.
Here are three great reasons to do the Great Ocean Road...

It’s the birthplace of iconic brands of Rip Curl and Quicksilver, which should give you an idea of the place; outdoorsy, stylish and casual. Torquay is one of the surfing capitals of the world, with a variety of beaches with different wave sizes to suit any swimmer or surfer: The big swells are at Bells Beach. Or you can snorkel, take a surf coast walk, or check out the Surfing Museum. Not surprisingly, the shopping is fantastic too – with plenty of brand name shops, a surf-centric shopping district and even outlet stores.

National Parks

Whale spotting

The beauty and variety of Australian national parks cannot be underestimated, as the sea and the elements have battered, shaped and sculpted the landscape for hundreds of years. As a relatively new discovery, many of Australia’s natural attractions are unspoiled and still intact. To name just three of the parks, you can marvel at the Mount Eccles National Park, which sits in the shadow of a long dormant volcano; behold the strange and exotic species in the protected 12 hectares of Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary, including zebra fish and Australian fur seals; and go whale spotting in the gorgeous Twelve Apostles Marine National Park.
Australian vineyard

Food and Wine

Australia’s climate and wide-open spaces are perfect for wine cultivation, and there are plenty of vineyards open to the public along the Great Ocean Road. You can take one of many vineyard tours in the Geelong Region or Henty Wine region; chow down on some freshly caught seafood straight from the Southern Ocean; see what’s on offer in public farms; or take your pick from one of the dozens of award-winning restaurants.
