has a big – and deserved – reputation as a party destination. But – while it’s great for clubbing – you can visit the sunny, scenic island south of Spain without meeting one club rep, belting back one Stella or sitting on one banana boat. Information gauged from Ibiza Uncovered is incomplete to say the least, and judging Ibiza based on a 1990s reality TV show is like judging Ireland by Glenroe.
Here’s an incomplete list of Ibiza’s attractions miles away from the nearest foam party...
1. Spectacular Food
Ibiza is close to Spain and Morocco, but has its own personality and culture. That means that its food is both distinctive and influenced by international cuisine: Ibiza’s lamb, oils, “flour honey” and wines are rightfully world famous. Chill out with a glass of wine al fresco with some of the world’s tastiest organic foods dancing on your palate.
2. Myriad Activities
Just in case you get tired of lounging on a beach or deckchair, Ibiza offers countless ways to get those joints moving. Snorkel or scuba in the crystal clear, pale blue Mediterranean; take a horseback ride along the hills and beaches on the local breed of horses (or go to the races); top up your tan while hitting the links on one of Ibiza’s picturesque golf courses; take one of the many guided treks; hit the roads and tracks on a cycling tour; or sit back and catch your dinner with a spot of fishing.
3. Pristine Beaches
Many miles away from any disco or cocktail bar, Ibiza has some of the whitest, purest and relaxing beaches you can imagine. On any part of the 18kilometres of beach you can take a swim; visit the local points of historical interest; go on a guided hike, or just enjoy the warmth of the Mediterranean sun.
4. Tonnes of Shopping
Shopping in Ibiza is more relaxed than in a major city location, but there’s no shortage of choice or bargains. In one of Ibiza’s many quaint and charming old villages you can find designer shops, street stalls, and local craft products.
5. A Day Trip to Formentera
Day trips to the Balearic island of Formentera are very popular. You can get a ferry across, and once there you could be forgiven for thinking that you are no longer in Spain, and that instead you have been magically transported to one of the Greek Islands (and if you think they are gorgeous, then wait until you step foot on Formentera!). Magnificent beaches, absolute seclusion, unspoilt landscape, as well as peace and tranquillity are just some of the things that draw tourists to this beautiful island getaway.
