We asked our adventure holiday expert Monica, to tell us her thoughts on what is going to be biggest and best in terms of adventure holidays for 2014. Here are her top 3 trips, you heard it here first!
1. Discover Burma
In recent months, Burma (which is also known as Myanmar) has been growing in popularity as a tourist destination. This comes after it has spent years in isolation from the outside world. There are so many wonderful and quirky things about Burma. For example, their local brand of cola (Star Cola) is more popular than Coca Cola; astrologers choose couples’ wedding dates for good luck; and you’d never get your hair cut on a Monday, Friday or on your birthday. Despite these oddities, Burma offers endless opportunities for a unique adventure. From tonnes of colonial buildings, to thousands of spectacular temples to, of course, the unparalleled Burmese hospitality and friendliness; Burma offers something distinctly special when it comes to adventure.
Our Pick: We love the Discover Burma trip – a 14 day treat exploring the best of Burma.
2. Highlights of Northern India
Okay, so we may be a TEENY bit biased here, as here in the Abbey office, we LOVE Indian food. India has always been a popular choice of adventure destination, and we don’t see that changing any time soon. When we think of India, we think wildlife (gorgeous tigers and cheeky monkeys), colourful culture, vibrant saris, breath-taking architecture…and that’s before we even get to the madras and masala! From the Taj Mahal to the Holy River Ganges to the tranquil Ranthambore National Park, India is something that dreams are made of.
Our Pick: Highlights of Northern India
– a 9 day trip which allows you experience India’s unique wildlife, fascinating culture and spectacular Moghul architecture.
3. Highlights of China
China is a place that, ten years ago, may as well have been as close as Mars. It just seemed forever away. However, in recent years, China has morphed into a bustling destination which has become more and more popular as an adventure holiday destination. China is steeped in historic sites and stunning landscapes; the Terracotta Warriors, the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Rich in beautiful mosques, magnificent monuments and, we cannot omit, the mouth-watering authentic Chinese food (and yes, it will ruin your Saturday night takeaway from the local Chinese, but it’s worth it!).
Our Pick: Highlights of China – a 13 day trip exploring China’s historic sites and stunning landscapes.
