5 things Thelma and Louise would love about this California fly-drive road trip
A road trip is a great way to see the States in classic Thelma and Louise style (but possibly without Brad Pitt and (spoiler alert) the unhappy ending!). And although there might be a few other minor details that make your life a little different from that of Thelma and Louise, there’s nothing stopping you from going on your own American road trip.
This Golden California fly-drive package really is a once in a lifetime, bucket-list-worthy trip. Contrary to your initial suspicions, this 11 night adventure is surprisingly affordable and easy to plan. In fact, the planning is done for you. The deal is all-inclusive and your getaway car will be waiting for you when you land at San Francisco International Airport.
California Road Trip: 5 of the best
All you need to think about is what you’ll do first in each of the amazing destinations. Read on for our favourite things about these Californian hotspots to get you started:
1. Sightseeing in San Francisco
Your first stop will be a three-night stay in San Francisco - a wonderful place to start off this trip of a lifetime. San Fran is steeped in American history. Its Haight-Ashbury district was the birthplace of hippie culture so there really is plenty to see and do in San Francisco to cater for all interests.
Some of the must-dos include a visit to the infamous Alcatraz Island, home to a former prison. You can hire a bike and cycle across the breathtaking Golden Gate Bridge. And don’t miss out on riding on one of the city’s historic Cable Cars. Then finish off your day with a meal in a world class seafood restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf.
2. Beautiful scenes along the Californian coast
The luxury of having a car means that you can hop out and explore anywhere that takes your fancy along the way. On your drive from San Francisco to LA you’ll have one night in Monterey. This is followed by a night in San Simeon, home to the famous Hearst Castle which you should make time to visit.
You may also want to stop in San Luis Obispo (which was named the Happiest city in America). Even Oprah wanted to see what makes San Luis Obispo so happy.
3. Shopping and movies in LA
What woman doesn’t want to do some major shopping while in the US? With a two-night stay in LA during our Californian fly-drive trip, you’ll have plenty of time to explore LA’s famous shopping scene. Once you’re all shopped out make time to embrace LA’s other trademark, film, with a trip to Universal Studios or Disneyland Resort. You could also book a Movie Stars’ Home Tour and keep an eye out for Tom Cruise, Madonna and maybe even Robbie Keane!
You also can’t leave LA without visiting the picture-perfect sandy beaches in Malibu or doing a spot of people watching along the famous boardwalk at Venice Beach.
4. Viva Las Vegas
After two nights in LA it’s on to Las Vegas where you can enjoy some fantastic entertainment, eat at some world-class restaurants and, of course, place a few bets. A night in the bright neon lights of the best casinos of Las Vegas is just something you have to do once in your life.
The Vegas area has a lot more to offer other than gambling, you know. The famous Grand Canyon National Park is a once in a lifetime trip in itself.
5. Chill out in San Diego
San Diego is every bit as chilled out as you’d believe it to be and a couple of nights here is the perfect way to finish your trip. Hit the beach for some surfing, or check out some of San Diego’s amazing attractions like Old Town, Balboa Park or Sea World- the world’s largest park devoted to marine life.
