The Costa del Sol
is a really fun holiday destination for Irish families.
For one thing, the Costa gets 300 days of sunshine a year so if escaping with the kids from rainy, cold weather sounds good, you better keep reading!
Our second favourite thing about the Costa del Sol is its proximity to Ireland. We know how kids don’t like long flights and this one is generally under the 3 hour mark—the length of a kids movie which they can watch on the plane!
So what else is fun about the Costa del Sol for families? We will use this blog post to answer some of the questions that you guys have been asking us about bringing your family on a holiday to this very popular destination.
Family holidays: FAQ
Q1. What is the weather like in the Costa del Sol?
A. The Costa del Sol has a warm and sunny climate and the temperature averages about 30 degrees Celsius at peak times during the summer. If you are holidaying near the coast however, there is usually a cool, refreshing breeze blowing in from the Mediterranean Sea. We would advise a jumper or cardigan for the kids in the evenings as the temperature can cool significantly depending on where you are. Don’t forget the sun block!
Q2. Are there activities for the kids to do?
A. Yes. Depending on the age of your kids, many of the larger family hotels and holiday villages will have special Kid’s Clubs where kids are entertained all day! If your kids decide they are too old (or too cool) for the kids clubs, there are still plenty of activities to keep them entertained—think mini golf, football, pool, beach, cinema and arcade games in many of the resorts and villages.
Q3. Are there any family day trips that we can take?
A. Yes. If you are looking for something different to do with the kids, there are many interesting and educational day trips that can be taken from these locations:
1. Culture: Cordoba
Discover this ancient Roman city, a UNESCO World heritage site by foot on one of the many guided walking tours
available. Once considered the most populous city in the world, it has an intriguing blend of religion, culture and history which gives the city its unique charm. While there, marvel at an ancient mosque cathedral, one of the only mosques to survive the Inquisition. Take a dip in an Arabian bath and have a go at some old-style Spanish Flamenco dancing, an experience that the kids will love.
2. Fun: Parque de la Paloma
This is an especially fun day trip for younger kids. This park, which is located in Benalmadena, is 200 square metres of pretty walks around a rectangular shaped lake. Kids are given stale bread on entry to the park to feed to the ducks in the lake. There are also many more types of animals for them to interact with including chickens, geese, roosters, emus and goats. Kids will love the large play area and adults will love the quietness of the bar/café.
Q4. What kind of food do they have for kids?
A. The cuisine in the Costa del Sol caters for every need. From traditional Spanish tapas and seafood dishes (lovely for you) to kid’s staples such as burgers and chips, restaurants will usually aim to please all tastes. There are also supermarkets within walking distance of the resorts which stock British and Irish staples, including baby food, fresh milk and kids’ treats and anything else that you might need to keep them happy!
Q5. Are there any water parks in the Costa del Sol?!
A. Oh yes! There is Aqualand
inTorremolinos, the biggest water park on the Costa—be prepared to spend the entire day! And just in case that wasn’t enough there is Parque Aquatico Mijas
, which is perfect for kids aged between 6 and 14.
Q6. What are the best holiday villages for families?
A. For family holidays, we would highly recommend either the Hotel Holiday Polynesia
or the Holiday Village Costa del Sol. We specifically chose these two holiday villages because we believe that they have the full package when it comes to family holidays—entertainment for the kids and relaxation for you. What more could you want?!
Finally, don’t forget to bring a convertor for your electrical items—they use a 2 prong plug in Spain and let’s face it, we can never have enough sockets with kids!
