One of the magnificent wonders of Australia has got to be its islands. Home to over 8,000 of them, these islands have created amazing holiday experiences for millions of backpackers over the decades. I am sure that if those islands had mouths, they would tell many tales!
Here is a lowdown of some of most popular islands along the East Coast…islands that are sure to give you the best holiday experience you could wish for.
Fraser Island is probably one of the best-know islands in Australia. As a World Heritage listed island, Fraser Island is rich in natural wonders – from freshwater lakes to white sandy beaches to ancient rainforests. As well as the awe-inspiring landscape, Fraser is home to dingoes and some magnicently majestic birds of prey.
Access to Fraser Island (which also happens to be the world’s largest sand island) is via a ferry from Hervey Bay (located around 3.5 hours from Brisbane). There is lots to do on the island including the following:
- Going on an exciting 4WD adventure
(with the chance to spot some dingoes and birds of prey)
- Diving into the clear blue waters of Lake McKenzie
- Fishing on the famous 75-Mile Beach
- Floating down the fast-flowing Eli Creek.
- Whale watching
You really CANNOT visit Oz without making that trip from Hervey Bay to Fraser!
I have been to Australia many, many times. The one place I always return to when I am on the East Coast of Australia is the Whitsunday Islands. The Whitsundays are made up of 74 islands which are located right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Their stunning natural landscapes are unparalleled with any other place I have visited, and their secluded beaches pave way for ultimate relaxation.
Hamilton and Hayman Island are two of my favourite Whitsunday Islands – and they just so happen to be two of the most popular. You can fly into Hamilton Island and explore it in a golf buggy, then engage in tonnes of different activities – from snorkelling to parasailing to golfing to sailing. One of the most enjoyable things to do is to jump on the Fantasea Reef Sleep - a two-day, one-night trip on a 'floating hotel' which will give you exclusive time to explore the reef, snorkelling among the Nemos, try your hand at scuba diving, as well as to take the opportunity to see the Great Barrier Reef marine life at night, under the stars. You can also take a trip to one of the world’s most iconic beaches, Whitehaven Beach.
From Hamilton Island, you can also visit the beautiful and exclusive Hayman Island. After flying into Hamilton, you will be picked up by the Hayman Luxury Launch which will bring you on a one-hour luxury cruise to Hayman Island – which just so happens to be Australia’s most awarded five-star resort. During the course of your stay, you will be treated to unsurpassed luxury, complete relaxation, top-class food, and unforgettable island activity which will encapsulate adventure and breath-taking scenery.
Other Australian Islands We Love
There are loads of other great islands in Australia. Other favourites of ours are:
- Green Island
- Fitzroy Island
- Dunk Island
- Lizard Island
These are all really luxury islands located in Far North Queensland. Lizard Island, in particular, is classified as a 5 star island so if you are looking for a real treat, this is the island for you!
