We all look forward to a break at Christmas time but it seems that the stress of the holiday season can actually make us even more stressed coming back to work in January.

Here are our top picks for Christmas sun destinations:
1. SPORTY SUN IN GRAN CANARIA
Our top pick of resorts in Gran Canaria is Puerto Rico. It’s a resort that is perfect for sports and activities-based holidays. Puerto Rico is also perfectly positioned on the southern side of the island which means it is warm and sunny all year round.
If you don’t want to sit by the pool and do nothing all day, don’t worry - there’s no chance of getting bored here. Activities include scuba diving, jet-skiing, windsurfing and paragliding. Nightlife is also hopping and happy hour starts in bars and clubs at 4pm with dancing continuing until 4.30am in some clubs.
2. LOUNGING IN LANZAROTE
If warmer climes are what you seek but you don’t want to be too uncomfortable, Lanzarote has a nice climate for relaxing without worrying too much about heat stroke. Temperatures remain mild here even in December which gets an average of 14-15 degrees Celsius.
The centre of everything in Lanzarote is in Puerto Del Carmen. In fact it is the largest holiday resort on the island, offering an abundance of restaurants, nightclubs, shops and activities to holiday makers. The resorts are usually full of Europeans including Irish and British so there is a nice Christmas feel here in December and plenty of Christmas-based menus and offers.
3. FAMILY FUN IN FUERTEVENTURA
If you’ve had enough of Christmas parties, Corralejo in Fuerteventura is a much more peaceful offering than many of the other resorts on the Canary Islands. Famous for its miles of golden, sandy beaches, there are plenty of activities here to keep kids and adults entertained including a large Waterpark and a golf complex.
The weather stays nice all year round with temperatures at an average of 18 degrees Celsius in December. The evenings can get cooler however, so it’s advisable to bring sweaters. You will also need a sweater if you decide to embark on one of the many boat trips available from Corralejo. Some of the boat trips are especially catered towards children and include fun games while they are spotting dolphins and whales.

Tenerife is one of the most popular destinations for Irish people at Christmas. For one, the weather is great all year round with temperatures at an average of 15-24 degrees Celsius. Secondly, there is a resort for every taste in Tenerife. The resort we have picked, Los Christianos, is a quieter alternative to the likes of Playa de Las Americas which appeals to a younger audience.
Los Christianos is one of the best resorts for kicking back and relaxing. However, don’t let its laid back quietness put you off; there are still plenty of shopping centres, eateries and bars here. In fact the restaurants are some of the best around and the quality cannot be beaten anywhere on Tenerife. There are also day trips from the resort to the Mount Teide National Park or boat excursions if you fancy some whale watching.
