My holiday in Australia

posted by Australasia Travel - 10 November 2011

I went to live in Australia for one year about 7 years ago, how time flies as it doesn’t seem that long ago as I still have fantastic memories of a wonderful country. I flew into Sydney and stayed in a hostel in Kings Cross, I know I heard all about Kings Cross but it had to be done. Interesting place particularly at night that is all I am going to say!

I ended up getting an apartment in Bondi Junction with a few other people. It was handy for going into town on a night out or going to Bondi Beach at the weekends.  I didn’t take to Bondi Beach as much as Manly or Cronulla beach.

I spent about 3 months in Sydney before I flew up to Cairns. I stayed in a hostel for 3 weeks, met some great people and had a brilliant time, you either love Cairns or hate it - I loved it. From there I headed to the Whitsundays and sailed for 2 or 3 days can’t quite remember. All I remember is Whitehaven beach probably the nicest beach I have ever seen. I then headed further south along the east coast and stopped in Byron Bay. It’s a place where time stood still, they are still in the 60’s it’s a really relaxed and chilled out town. Plenty of surfing, cafes & good times.

I then ended up back in Sydney for another 2 months working & playing. I ventured out to the Blue Mountains which is amazing. It has some great scenery, particularly the 3 Sisters and there is plenty of wildlife from birds to lizards.

I then flew to Adelaide and spent 2 weeks there. This is another place you will either love or hate and I loved it. There are so many cafes and during the summer there are festivals nearly every night. It has a cool beach which you can get to by tram straight from the city.  Adelaide is a nice place to stroll around. I never drink wine but when in Rome & all that, so I decided to go on a wine tour which lasted all day and we were taken to about 5-6 vineyards, we were told one of them is owned by Cliff Richard, if you can believe that. I then got the overnight bus to Melbourne, which took about 10 hours; overnight is the best way to travel. While in Melbourne I went to see the Australian Open tennis in the Rod Laver stadium. What a great day, good tennis, sun shining and a few beers. I even did the whole Neighbours tour - it’s exactly as you see on TV.  If you do get to Melbourne you must visit the largest casino in the southern hemisphere, I won about $30 that paid for my night out.

After Melbourne I headed back to Sydney to meet some friends before I headed home. I had about 1 week left and as I was going home it ended up being a great week’s party. This has been just a taste of my year’s holiday in Australia and I hope you enjoyed reading it.
