Crete is the biggest of all the Greek islands and is located on the southern side of the Aegean Sea. Crete is famous for its beaches, its wonderful natural scenery and its rich Minoan history. Crete has three airports, Heraklion, Chania and Thessaloniki and regular ferries also operate from Crete to other Greek islands and Athens.

Crete is a long, slim island and is broken into 4 prefectures or regions: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lassithi. At the western end is Chania. The beach resorts are all close to Chania town which has medieval Venetian harbour front with restaurants, bars and boutiques. The Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest gorge, is located in the south of Chania and is a wonderful place to see Crete’s unspolit scenery. Next over is Rethymno which has beautiful beaches, harbour fronts and plenty of activities. Herkalion, on the eastern side of the island, is the most popular region and Heraklion town is one of the busiest city centres in Crete. Herakion is home to the amazing Minoan palace of Knossos which is a must-see. Malia beach resort is located here and is the centre of Crete’s famous nightlife. Furthest east is Lassithi, a quieter region, renowned for its natural beauty. Vai, a tropical beach with a forest of 6000 palm trees, is located here. Elounda and Sissi are busier towns in this area but there are plenty of small villages that are off the beaten track.

Crete is ideal for families, couples, groups and solo holidays. With fabulous beaches, beautiful landscapes, lively towns, nightlife and incredible historical attractions including the Minoan monuments, Knossos Palace and Phaistos Palace in Herkalion, there something for everyone in Crete.
