Argentina

Start your Argentinean holiday with a trip in the buzzing capital Buenos Aires, to soak up the unique continental-style atmosphere, take in a dazzling tango show, visit the city’s cultural and historical attractions and shop for leather bargains.

Visit a real ‘estancia’ in the pampas, meet some Gauchos (Argentinean cowboys) and savour their incomparable barbecue food. To the north of the country, in the rainforest on the border with Brazil, the natural spectacle that is Iguazu Falls cannot be missed and will remain in your memory forever.

For true adventure and magnificent, unspoilt landscapes visit the vast Patagonian regions, and marvel at their lakes, forests and glaciers. Argentina is also famous for it wines so why not explore the Mendoza and Salta wine regions; explore the skies with a helicopter ride or relax with a round of golf.

Argentina's enormous size dictates an incredible variety of climates. The northeast is tropical and humid on the border with Brazil; the northern Chaco plain areas are usually hot and dry in the summer, and moderately cold and dry in the winter; the capital city of Buenos Aires and the central coastal regions are warm and humid (often hot) in summer; then cool in winter.

The central Pampas is generally moderate throughout the year, with dry winters, hot summers and desert-like conditions in the far west. The massive Patagonia region's weather ranges from subtropical (mild) conditions in the north, to sub arctic status in the far south. The higher elevations of the Andes are very cold, with frequent snow in the southern peaks.

Seasons in Argentina are the opposite of those in the northern hemisphere.

Train
Travelling by train in Argentina is a popular option for tourists who are planning on staying mostly in the Buenos Aires province. Ferrobaires is the public railway company, which is the most popular and largest significant carrier in the region. It operates long-distance passenger trains throughout the Buenos Aires province. It operates out of the three main train stations: Retiro, Constitucion, and Once. Trains tend to make infrequent trips to few destinations outside of these three stations.

Plane
There are a number of airlines that offer flights from Buenos Aires to almost all domestic destinations in Argentina. Be sure to book flights in advance, even during the low season, because many flights get sold out quickly. Aerolineas Argentinas and Lan Argentina are Argentina's most popular domestic flights carriers. Very few cities have direct flights between each other (excluding Buenos Aires), so to fly from one destination to another you will most likely have to fly to Buenos Aires and make a connection to your next destination.

Bus
Bus travel is a very attractive transportation alternative when travelling in Argentina. Not only is travel by bus more cost effective and easier than travel by air or car, it also offers some fantastic views of passing scenery. Buses offer sleeping beds along with both budget and first class seats and some long-distance trips offer a meal service. A range of bus routes and services are available all over Argentina.

Car
There are many car rental companies throughout Argentina although they are more expensive than other forms of transport. You must be over 21 to rent a car. The rental companies will usually charge your credit card $6000 as a deposit and in case of an accident but once the car is returned this is cancelled from your card. As towns in Argentina are so far apart and most petrol stations are not self-service it is best to plan your trip carefully. Also make sure your rental car agency provides repair kits or emergency services, as many of the roads are unpaved and car damage is unfortunately a frequent problem.
