Fiji
The capital and largest city of Fiji is called Suva and is located on the Viti Levu island as is the popular town of Nadi. The main towns on Vanua Levu are Labasa and Savusavu. As well as tropical beaches where you can go scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, surfing, and sailing, Fiji is also home to rugged mountains, lush green rainforest, waterfalls and remote villages.
Culturally the influences of Pacific, Indian, European and Chinese cultures are reflected in the food, architecture, language and religion. BULA, is a word you will hear many times a day in Fiji. It means “hello” and is pronounced either “boola” or ‘mboola”. Either way it is always pronounced with a smile!
Fiji enjoys tropical conditions throughout the year with gentle trade winds tempering the heat and humidity. Each of the main islands are divided by mountain ranges, and have a "wet" side to the south and east, and a "dry" side to the north and west.
Resorts tend to line the west and south coasts of the larger islands. Fiji receives 100 inches of annual rainfall. The seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere, as Spring is (Sept-Nov), Summer is (Dec-Feb), Fall is (Mar-May) and Winter is (Jun-Aug).
Flights
Regular flights connect Nadi and Suva on the main island and take 35-minutes. Two local airlines serve 13 islands from either Nadi or Suva. Flights to the tourist destinations run on a daily basis. The resort islands of Mana and Malolo Lailai in the Mamanucas are visited about a dozen times a day.
Boat
Passenger ferries connect Nadi with the Mamanuca Islands and they run several times a day from 9am to 4pm and Yasawa Islands has a daily service. There's a daily service also to Vanua Levu and Ovalau and a fortnightly ferry service to the Northern Islands and Southern Islands.
Bus
Pacific Transport and Sunbeam buses on Viti Levu operate a continuous bus service 7 days a week between Nadi and Suva. They also continue around the island via Lautoka, Ba and Rakiraki. The service is less frequent on Sundays. A scenic way to experience the island is to take the express bus along the Queens Highway, which takes about 4 hours.
Taxi
Taxis around Nadi charge around F$8-10 from the airport to Town. The best advice is to always settle on a fare to your destination before heading off. Make sure you do not confuse the share taxis with minibuses, "share taxis" which are not occupied pick up passengers at bus stops and charge the bus fare. They are particularly good value on long-distance trips.
Car
There are half a dozen car hire companies with bases in Nadi and Suva. Each company has its own pricing policy, and you can frequently find discounts, special deals, and some give-and-take bargaining over long-term and long-distance use. All major companies have offices in the commercial concourse at Nadi International Airport, so it's easy to shop around.
