Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia’s capital and largest city Kuala Lumpur is the gateway to a truly Asian experience.
With so many choices in Malaysia, the only difficulty is deciding on the best itinerary. The bustling cities of Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown have much to offer, with luxury hotels, street markets, heritage sites and top class restaurants. Outside the city choose from walking trails in the rainforest, cool hill resort retreats, idyllic island getaways such as Penang and Langkawi, and the soft white sands of countless beaches.
Malaysia is one of Asia’s most progressive countries, with an efficient public and tourist infrastructure. The Malaysian people will delight in introducing you to their country’s culture, nature and diverse traditions. Malaysian food is a particular delight, with Chinese, Indian, Malay and other influences creating a wonderful choice of tasty dishes to sample in restaurants and street markets.
Nature lovers will enjoy wildlife sightings in the national parks and snorkelling on the coral reefs, while shoppers will be tempted by the markets and shopping malls.
Malaysia has a tropical climate with many sunny days. The temperature ranges 70°F to 90°F throughout most of the year. Two monsoon seasons (Apr-Oct and Oct-Feb) bring consistent, yet moderate rainfall.
Relative humidity is very high year-round.
Plane
There are many budget carrier companies in Malaysia such as AirAsia. There are always promotional & affordable flights particularly if you book in advance. The only real option if you are travelling between Malaysia and Borneo is by plane. Malaysia Airlines has competitive fares if booked through the internet.
Train
Long-distance trains in Malaysia are usually a lot slower than travelling by road. The Jungle Railway runs the eastern line between Tumpat close to the Thai border and Gemas.
Car
They drive on the left hand side in Malaysia. There are excellent highways, linking the North & South Expressway along the West Coast from Singapore all the way to the Thai border. It is always advisable to drive with causion in the cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Most rental agencies will require a valid car drivers licence. Beaware that there are regular police checks so make sure you have all your documents.
Taxi
You will usually have to agree a price even with metred taxis. Make sure you know which taxi you are getting into, for example in Kuala Lumpur, the budget taxis are usually Red and White or Yellow while the luxury taxis are blue in colour. You should be able to hire a taxi all day for around RM100.
Bus
The cheapest way to travel around Malaysia is by bus. All towns will have a bus terminal with connections to other parts of the country. The two largest and more reliable bus compaines are Transnasional and NICE/Plusliner and are recommended for long-distance travel.
