South Australia

South Australia is the only state that borders all other states in Australia with the exception of Tasmania as this is an island. The first settlement to be established was Kangaroo Island before the rising sea levels turned it into an island. South Australia’s capital is Adelaide

The state is known as the festival state and fine wine and has a great history in sport including basketball, cricket, motor sports and the most popular sport Australian Rules. South Australia has many contrasts with rugged outback wilderness, scenic mountain ranges, an extensive coastline, offshore islands and a large meandering river.

The most amazing thing is that even though South Australia is the driest state in Australia it has a varied coastline of 3,700 kilometres and is home to the Murray River, which runs 650km through South Australia.

South Australia climate can range from desert temperatures in the north and Mediterranean weather on the coast. The coast can experience hot weather between December and February, but spring and autumn are usually more pleasant.

Bus
There are three major bus companies, which offer an affordable and a comfortable way of getting around South Australia, which include Firefly Express, Greyhound and Premier Stateliner.

Train
There are many rail journeys throughout South Australia and also to other states, such as the Ghan, which connects Adelaide and Darwin via Alice Springs twice weekly.

The Indian Pacific train travels between Sydney and Perth via Adelaide and therefore makes it one of the world's longest rail journeys. It travels twice weekly in both directions. The Overland travels between Melbourne and Adelaide three times a week in both directions. The Southern Spirit Rail Journey offers two tremendous outback rail adventures, starting with 'The Grand Tour' and 'The Coastal Epic', travelling from Uluru to Brisbane via Adelaide and vice versa. All of these amazing train journeys are owned by the Great Southern Rail and provide a variety of luxury, entertainment and the option of sightseeing tours while off the train.

Car
South Australia has a well-developed highway system, however be advised that in the northern and western regions many roads are un-paved or dirt roads and therefore you should take extra care while driving.  Here are a some suggested driving routes you could experience:

  • Adelaide, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island - 5 days
  • Barossa, Flinders Ranges and Clare Valley - 4 days
  • Eyre Peninsula Drive is a 745 kilometres drive and starts at Port Augusta and proceed to Whyalla - 74 kilometres, then Whyalla to Cowell - 106 kilometres, Cowell to Port Lincoln via Tumby Bay - 160 kilometres, Port Lincoln to Elliston via Coffin Bay - 170 kilometres, Elliston to Streaky Bay via Venus Bay - 126 kilometres, and Streaky Bay to Ceduna - 109 kilometres.
  • Kangaroo Island is the third largest island off the mainland and is 155 kilometres long and up to 55 kilometres wide, it covers an area of 4,500 square kilometres. You can bring your vehicle from the mainland by ferry or you can hire one from Kingscote, Penneshaw or the airport. 4WD vehicles are not necessary.

Sydney & Whitsundays

I had 3 weeks hoilday, and wanted to see my brother and family in Australia. My brother lives in Bondi, so thought it best to stay in this area.

I stayed at the Swiss Grand Bondi hotel on Bondi Beach which was fabulous. Lovely spacious rooms with small separate room off bedroom and great rooftop swimming pool and spa. Bondi beach has great beach/walks/restaurants/bars/shops and is only 20mins from city centre, so we had best of both words. Were able to go to city centre to do harbour cruise, city tour and wander around the city & harbour area taking it all in.

After Sydney we flew to Hamilton Island and spent a few days at the Reef View Hotel. Hamilton is great with loads to do, nice restaurants, good sailing trips. Highlight was sailing trip to Whitehaven beach, stunning.

Everything was arranged by Australia Travel Centre, top class, Thanks for knowledge and professionalism.
