Stellenbosch
Known worldwide for its quality wines, the spectacular beauty of the surroundings and its warm South African hospitality, Stellenbosch is home to one of the most prestigious old Wine Regions in the world.
In the hillsides and valleys of this charming landscape are found the most well-known towns; Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek and Somerset West. The pretty countryside is dotted with wine estates and white washed homesteads in the Cape Dutch architectural style.
At most estates, visitors can sample a variety of wines at tastings, or enjoy a delicious picnic lunch of fresh breads, locally produced cheeses and of course chilled estate wines. Some also offer horse riding, accommodation, golf and other activities.
Wines differ from region to region and essential visits include Stellenbosch, an elegant university city, and Franschhoek, original home of the French Huguenot Settlers, today the wine and food capital of South Africa.
Just like Cape Town the winelands has a Mediterranean climate. It’s a well kept secret that during March to May is the best time to visit the region. There is little wind and the days are usually warm and pleasant. These are great conditions for the vineyards of the Winelands. During Autumn the vineyards are transformed lush green to a bright blanket of gold and cherry.
Car
The best way to explore the Cape Winelands is by car or a tour bus. Train routes are also available, but can be difficult to find.
The main routes through the winelands are on the N1 and N2 highways. All vineyards are signposted.
