Guayaquil
Located on the banks of Guayas River, this port city is the largest in Ecuador and home to many interesting sights. The Mercado Artesanal is popular, with over 200 shops selling handicrafts, jewelry, and paintings. Visitors can also enjoy the popular Bahia marketplace as well as many parks, monuments, and historic buildings.
Take a walk up the Santa Ana & El Carmen hills and view the city. At the top you will find a lighthouse, museum, small chapel and park. The Malecon del Salado, the city’s riverfront town square, has lots of seafood restaurants. All flights to the Galápagos Islands either stop or originate in Guayaquil, so the city is the next best place after Quito to set up a trip.
