Lopes Mendes beach in Ilha Grande is regarded as one of the best beaches in the world. The shallow water makes it great for surfing, snorkelling, kayaking, sailing or diving. Although subject to development restriction, small-scale ecotourism is encouraged on the island, which is roadless and off-limits to cars.
There are over 150 km of hiking trails connecting the handful of coastal villages and hamlets, where lodging is available, to one another and to the many beaches, mountain peaks, waterfalls, and pristine forests.
