Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island was inhabited long before the island was cut off by rising sea levels and it is the third largest island in Australia behind Tasmania and Melville Island. Meet native wildlife - spot pelicans flying over lagoons, koalas sleeping in eucalyptus trees or sea lions on white sandy beaches.
During the year each season brings something different, in the summer (December-February) kangaroos are normally seen at dusk & dawn, when New Zealand fur seals have their pups and the little penguins loose their feathers & half their body weight. In autumn (March-May) times change as the rainfall provides the animals with fresh plants & trees to feed on. Black cockatoos and penguins begin nesting & fungi starts to appear on the rotting wood.
Winter (June-August) brings out the wildlife, with koalas riding on the back of their mothers after emerging from the pouch and the Southern white whales migrating. Spring (September-November) brings everything to life, wild flowers, eucalyptus trees and Platypuses lay two eggs and these are usually up to 20 metres long.
Sydney & Whitsundays
I had 3 weeks hoilday, and wanted to see my brother and family in Australia. My brother lives in Bondi, so thought it best to stay in this area.
I stayed at the Swiss Grand Bondi hotel on Bondi Beach which was fabulous. Lovely spacious rooms with small separate room off bedroom and great rooftop swimming pool and spa. Bondi beach has great beach/walks/restaurants/bars/shops and is only 20mins from city centre, so we had best of both words. Were able to go to city centre to do harbour cruise, city tour and wander around the city & harbour area taking it all in.
After Sydney we flew to Hamilton Island and spent a few days at the Reef View Hotel. Hamilton is great with loads to do, nice restaurants, good sailing trips. Highlight was sailing trip to Whitehaven beach, stunning.
