Santiago
Santiago, also known as Santiago de Chile, is the capital and largest city in Chile. The old town retains much of its 19th century neo-classical architecture, in tree-lined streets and quaint plazas. The cosmopolitan downtown area hums with activity well into the night.
It boasts parks, theatres, cinemas, museums, art galleries and restaurants to suit all tastes. Along Providencia Avenue a galaxy of shops, boutiques and fascinating antique stores will tempt you inside. The Parque Metropolitano is Santiago's playground, with walking trails, picnic areas, and a zoo. An exciting cable car ride to the top of San Cristobal hill provides a spectacular view of the city and surroundings.
It is only 60 km away from the main South American ski centres, and an hour’s drive from the beautiful beaches of the Pacific – making it possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe in the afternoon. South of Santiago are the stunning rich vineyards of the Maipo Valley, which is regarded as one of the world's best wine producing regions.
