Sydney is the capital of New South Wales (NSW) and is one of the most popular cities in Australia to visit. It has many beautiful beaches, the most famous ones being Bondi, Coogee and Palm Beach where Home & Away is filmed. You can walk from Bondi to Coogee, with ample bars & cafés to choose from along the way.
If you’re brave and wish to bare all, then Tamarama is the beach for you, which is located just between Bondi & Coogee. Other popular spots include Circular Quay, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Darling Harbour, The Rocks, Manly, Botanic Gardens and the spectacular Blue Mountains; you will never be stuck for something to do in Sydney.
For the shopper there is Oxford Street and the markets, which open at the weekends, the most popular being Paddy’s Market and The Rocks Market. Paddy’s Market located next to China Town, would be more for the backpacker as it’s cheaper but both are definitely worth a visit. Sydney enjoys a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. Enjoy a lovely dining experience with a trip to the Sky Tower set 300 metres above the city centre offering a 360 degree view over Sydney.
Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is Australia’s most famous beach and is world-renowned. There are coastal walks from Bondi to Coogee, which take in other beaches such as Tamarama and some historical spots. It has great surfing schools and many people surf before the start of their working day. There is a green area behind the beach where you can take a stroll or rollerblade and play games. There is plenty of shopping, restaurants and bars once you have finished sunbathing on the beach.
Sydney Opera House
Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognisable buildings in the world. The Opera House boasts 20,000 light fittings. Its gleaming white sails comprise 1,057,000 Swedish tiles. It was named as a world heritage site in July 2007. You can see a performance or just take a tour behind the scenes, however it is unlikely you will be allowed onto the roof like Billy Connolly was! You can walk along the paths, which lead you back towards the city centre through the Botanic Gardens.
Circular Quay
Circular Quay a busy area with many street performers. Writer Walk is along the Circular Quay trail (where Billy Connolly talked about on his World Tour of Australia). As you walk you can look out for plaques on the ground of famous writers who have a connection with Sydney or NSW, such as Charles Darwin, Banjo Paterson and Mark Twain. Circular Quay has good transport links with buses, trains and ferries. There are plenty of excellent restaurants & cafés to enjoy. You can take a short walk to the Opera House, just 500m from the Circular Quay ferry terminal.
The Rocks
The famous Rocks Market opens every Friday and at it can hold more than 200 stalls, which will cater for most lifestyles with designer products from fashion items to locally produced products. You will find almost anything you are looking for including great food and fashion. Soak up the atmosphere as you stroll through the market including its many buskers. The Rocks also has some of Sydney’s oldest bars. The Glenmore Hotel's rooftop bar offers some great views of Sydney. You can also take The Rocks pub tour and discover some of Sydney’s favorite pubs. Other worthwhile tours to take include the ghost tour, The Rocks walking tour, or take a cruise on the Captain Cook around the harbour. There is plenty to enjoy at The Rocks.
I had 3 weeks hoilday, and wanted to see my brother and family in Australia. My brother lives in Bondi, so thought it best to stay in this area.
I stayed at the Swiss Grand Bondi hotel on Bondi Beach which was fabulous. Lovely spacious rooms with small separate room off bedroom and great rooftop swimming pool and spa. Bondi beach has great beach/walks/restaurants/bars/shops and is only 20mins from city centre, so we had best of both words. Were able to go to city centre to do harbour cruise, city tour and wander around the city & harbour area taking it all in.
After Sydney we flew to Hamilton Island and spent a few days at the Reef View Hotel. Hamilton is great with loads to do, nice restaurants, good sailing trips. Highlight was sailing trip to Whitehaven beach, stunning.
