Things to do in the Canary Islands

Dramatic coastlines, year-round sunshine and palm fringed golden beaches, it's safe to say there was a lot to enjoy about my Canary Islands holiday. I spent two nights in both Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura courtesy of the Spanish Tourism Office. There’s so much to love about the canaries, the weather, attractions and local people to name a few.

Location

While in Gran Canaria, I made myself at home in the Seaside Palm Beach Hotel, Maspalomas. The staff were so welcoming, and the pool and spa were to die for!

The 4-star Suite Hotel Atlantis was my home for 2-nights while in Fuerteventura. With Corralejo nearby, this hotel is in the perfect location. This resort has 5 restaurants and a fitness centre. My personal favourite facility was the ‘Atlantis Wellness Centre’, the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate your mind and body.

What I Loved

Whale and dolphin watching is a must do attraction on a Canary Island holiday. Seeing these animals in their natural habitat is an experience I’ll never forget. The best place to spot them is in Mogan Town, roughly a 25-minute drive from Maspalomas.

Activities and Places to See

  • Wander through the cobbled street of Vegueta’s Old Town in Las Palmas. This town is full of historical buildings and market stalls and is only a 30-minute drive from Maspalomas.

  • Dive into some fun at the Poema del Mar Aquarium. There are over 350 species of marine life here!
  • Explore the dunes of Corralejo, just a short walk from Suite Hotel Atlantis. While you are in Corralejo I highly recommend the boat trip.

Food & Bars

Dinner in the Seaside Palm Beach hotel was delicious, I really enjoyed the Seafood. While in Las Palmas, you must try the Tapas in Mercado del Puerto, it’s some of the best I’ve ever had! For those with a sweet tooth, the desserts that the Suite Hotel Atlantis offer are gorgeous.

Beaches

Corralejo is home to some stunning beaches, one of my favourites would have to be Playas Grandes, I could have laid there all day. The beaches of Jandia are loved by many tourists, Playa de Sotavento is particularly beautiful. If you’re a thrill seeker, this is a popular spot among kite surfers.
