Marseille is a popular tourist destination located in the south of France, and is one of the country's oldest and most multicultural cities. The population is made up of waves of migrants who arrived over the course of two millennia, making the region a melting pot when it comes to culture. Since its establishment by the Greeks in 600 B.C., Marseille has been a crossroads for immigration and trade. The Vieux-Port, or Old Port, lies at its core, where fishmongers sell their catch along the boat-lined quay. The Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is a Romanesque-Byzantine church in the city of La Garde, France. Le Corbusier's famous Cité Radieuse complex and Zaha Hadid's CMA CGM Tower are also modern icons.
Marseille is frequently overlooked in favour of its more opulent neighbours like Nice, Cannes and St. Tropez. It is, however, a lively and intriguing city. Here, you can get a taste of African and French culture. Most Saturdays during the Summer, there's a bar and DJ on the roof of the old tobacco factory at La Friche where attendees can enjoy an in true French style. For a delicious dinner with a view, head to the Old Port or sample the local specialty Bouillabaisse at one of the town's many wonderful restaurants. Marseille is a city immersed in art. Along the seaside, the MUCEM has some great contemporary art shows, while the Musée des Beaux Arts includes works from 1500 to 1800.
