Itinerary

Day 1 - Join trip in San Jose

  • Arrive in San Jose. Welcome meeting at 7pm.

Accommodation: Autentico Hotel.

Day 2 - Poas Volcano & San Jose

  • Morning visit to the Poas Volcano National Park, followed by a stop off at the Toucan Rescue Ranch. Afternoon exploring San Jose’s architectural highlights and the large Central Market.

Day 3 - San Gerardo de Dota and the Savegre Cloud Forest

  • Drive to the wild cloud forest of Savegre, one of the best places in Costa Rica for sightings of the elusive Resplendent Quetzal. This afternoon we explore the area around San Gerardo de Dota which contains around 200 species of bird and countless plant.

Day 4 - Search for quetzal and explore the forest

  • Early morning start in search of the quetzal. After breakfast the rest of the day is free to explore the walks and trails around the lodge.

Day 5 - Rural Turrialba

  • Drive through this agricultural region, arriving in Turrialba in the afternoon. Explore the town of Turrialba before visiting a typical 'finca' (farm), for a traditional meal - the local cheese will certainly be on the menu!

Day 6 - Whitewater rafting through the forest-covered Pacuare River

  • One of Costa Rica's most scenic rivers, The Pacuare is a perfect river for rafting. Calm stretches between the class III-IV rapids allow time to appreciate the passage through rainforest-topped canyons and tumbling waterfalls. Enjoy lunch on the river before returning to the hotel for the evening. If you don’t fancy rafting then a trip to CATIE and their huge botanical garden, or alternatively a visit to the community-led Aquiares coffee plantation can be organised by your Tour Leader.

Day 7 - Tortuguero National Park

  • Morning drive through banana plantations to the Caribbean coast. Take aboat to a spectacular lodge in the Tortuguero National Park, where you will spend the next two nights. Travelling through the network of jungle waterways it is easy to see why this area is often called a 'mini Amazon'. Upon arrival at the lodge, which is in an idyllic setting between the Caribbean Sea and the waterway, you will take a short walking tour of the village of Tortuguero.

Accommodation: La Baula Lodge. Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 8 – Tortuguero National Park

  • Full day to explore the park searching for wildlife including a bird watching trip by boat at dawn, a nature walk to understand more about the area's unique ecosystem, and an afternoon trip on the waterways. Search for howler monkeys, ocelots, tapir and the elusive jaguar. You may even see different species of turtle nesting close to the lodge. There is also the option of a seasonal evening turtle walk in the company of experienced guides. 

Accommodation: La Baula Lodge. Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 9 - La Tirimbina and Sarapiqui

  • Leave the lodge in the morning and travel by boat back to either Cano Blanco or Pavona and on to Sarapiqui. On the way there is a visit to La Tirimbina for a chocolate tour, the most important products for the Mayan and Aztec cultures. After arriving in Sarapiqui there is an evening walk in the Selva Verde Rainforest, in search of nocturnal species such as snakes and tarantulas.

Accommodation: Selva Verde Lodge. Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch.

Day 10 - Selva Verde Rainforest Reserve, Arenal and La Fortuna

  • Morning walk on some of the trails of the Selva Verde Rainforest Reserve, through a tropical paradise of almendro trees and toucans. Drive around the great central volcanic massif to Arenal. Take a walk on the flanks of the volcano to a viewpoint for a closer view. Evening arrival in La Fortuna for a tow night stay.

Day 11 - Free day around La Fortuna

  • Today has been left free to explore the Arenal area. Chooses from local treks to waterfalls and along lava trails, a wildlife spotting tour or hanging bridges and zip wire adventures. Your Tour Leader will be able to provide information on all the options. 

Accommodation: Hotel San Bosco Inn. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 12 - Carara Biological Reserve and Manuel Antonio National Park

  • Take in the stunning views on the drive along the Pacific Coast to Manuel Antonio National Park for a three night stay. On the way, visit Carara Biological Reserve, famed for scarlet macaws and abundant birdlife.

Accommodation: La Foresta Resort. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 13 - Manuel Antonio National Park

  • The morning is spent exploring the rich wildlife of Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the best places in Costa Rica to see sloths. The remainder of the day can be spent relaxing on the white sandy beaches, enjoying a swim in the warm azure waters. 

Accommodation: La Foresta Resort. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 14 – Free day in Manuel Antonio National Park 

  • You can choose to revisit the park, relax on the beaches or enquire about rafting or snorkelling trips. 

Accommodation: La Foresta Resort. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 15 – End San Jose Airport

  • Depart Manuel Antonio this morning and drive to San Jose's Juan Santamaria International Airport where the trip ends at 11am. For those on later flights a private transfer can be arranged at additional cost later in the day if desired. It's also possible to extend your stay in Manuel Antonio if you would like some additional time at the beach.
