Phuket is a province located in southern Thailand and is made up of the island of Phuket and 32 smaller islands which lay off the west coast of the mainland. It is Thailand’s largest island, with much of its land being made up of mountainous areas which includes the Phuket mountain range. The area is also heavily forested, with an estimated 60% of the land being classified as green areas and rubber or palm oil plantations. Phuket experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with a mean annual temperature of 27°C. December to March is considered the dry season, while the remaining eight months are the wet season.
