Arrecife is Lanzarote’s capital city and is located on the island’s east coast. This port city is just 7km from Lanzarote airport. The port has two impressive castles standing guard over the harbour. Ferries travel between Arrecife and the other islands in the Canaries as well as Europe and mainland Africa.

Arrecife is an ideal base for exploring Lanzarote and has a lot to offer including shopping and lively nightlife. The old town has streets lined with cafes and small shops and a craft market on Saturday mornings. The inland seawater lagoon, Charco San Gines, is a peaceful spot with fishing boats and restaurants and from here you can follow an avenue lined with palm trees to Castillo de San Gabriel. The local beach, Playa del Reducto, is great for swimming due to its calm waters, golden sand and palm trees. From Arrecife to Puerto del Carmen there is a 12km walking and cycling promenade with tasty tapas bars along the route!

Arrecife is suitable for travellers who want more than just a beach holiday. From Arrecife you can explore other parts of the island easily or simply relax on the city’s local beach. Art lovers will enjoy the museum of contemporary art in Castillo de San Jose and the city’s Canarian architecture.
