Torrevieja is a seaside resort located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante 45km north of Alicante airport. Torrevieja was formerly a salt-mining and fishing village, and salt is still shipped worldwide from the Marina Internacional.
Today Torrevieja is best known for its two salt lakes; the Salinas of Torrevieja is pink, while La Mata is green. You can take a tourist train from the old town centre to the Lagunas de la Mata-Torrevieja Nature Park to view the flamingos and other birdlife. The golden sand beach of El Acequión lies near the marina in the centre of the town. The promenade along the coast in Torrevieja is dotted with beaches backed by restaurants, shops, bars and local markets. In the old centre of Torrevieja there is a modern shopping centre with shops, a supermarket, a bowling alley, a game hall and a cinema. Nearby Aquapolis Waterpark is popular with families.
