Sintra is a charming and historic town situated in the hills of the Serra de Sintra just 20kms from Lisbon. With its variety of fascinating palaces and mansions and its beautiful natural setting, it’s easy to see why Sintra is such a popular day trip destination from Lisbon. Sintra can be reached by train from Lisbon and it is then just a 15-minute walk to the historic centre of the town
Sintra is an enchanting town with many famous attractions and a history that can be traced back to Neolithic and Roman times. One of Europe’s finest palaces, the ‘Park and National Palace of Pena’ is perched on a hill in the Sintra mountains overlooking the town. The palace was built in the 19th century and features striking colours and famous gardens with trees and plants from around the world. The ancient ruins of a Moorish castle occupy another vantage point over the town. ‘Quinta da Regaleira’, a lavish 19th century gothic mansion with famous gardens is also worth exploring. Other attractions include the ‘Palace of Sintra’ and the ‘Monserrate Palace’. Sintra is famed for its delicious treats such as Queijada and Travesseiro, Portuguese custard tarts!
Sintra is a great place to explore for all visitors who like history and culture. It is worth staying for a night or two to experience Sintra and there are hotels and guesthouses within the town. If you visit for a day trip, make sure to start early in the morning as it can get busy in peak months.
There are regular flights with Aer Lingus, Ryanair and TAP Air Portugal from Dublin to Lisbon. We always have great deals on holidays to Sintra.
