Melbourne: 3 Unmissable Sporting Events 2014-15

Sports Trips to Australia, Travel TipsAnyone who has lived in Australia for any length of time will tell you that the Aussies are probably the most competitive people on the planet in terms of sports.
In Melbourne especially, that competitive spirit really comes to the fore—the city even has its own Sports and Entertainment Precinct!  Melbourne is the premier sporting city of Australia and more major sporting events take place here than anywhere else in Aus. So whether you are a major sports fan or an amateur enthusiast, Melbourne has something for you.
Looking at the calendar of events in Melbourne for 2014-2015, it’s easy to think that sporting events are the only events on this year because there are so many!
We have picked our top 3 sporting events that you should try to see in Melbourne sometime this year or in 2015.

Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington Racecourse (November 2014)

Melbourne Cup CarnivalThe 154th Melbourne Cup Carnival takes place in November 2014. It is the premier Horseracing event in the Southern Hemisphere, taking place over 7 days at the world famous Flemington Racecourse. “The race that stops a nation”, the Melbourne Cup, takes place on Tuesday November 4th. The day is so popular that it is a public holiday for those working in the city.
Irish trainers and jockeys have done pretty well here over the years. 2012 was a spectacular year for the Irish with Irish horses coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Fiorente, last year’s Cup winner had also been trained in Ireland.  Trainer Dermot Weld has performed exceptionally well here, winning the Cup twice in 1993 and 2002. Will 2014 be the year of the Irish once again? Will you be there to see it?
Off track, expect live music, high fashion, a host of parties and entertainment around Flemington Racecourse and in and around the city. Attendance levels are always very high so pre-booking tickets is essential.

Australian OpenAustralian Open at Melbourne Park (January 2015)

Voted the best tennis tournament in the world by Tennis Magazine in 2013, the Australian Open 2015 is the ultimate sporting event for any tennis fan—if you can bear the heat that is! The first of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments takes place here in Melbourne Park and is usually held during the last fortnight in January.
The event this year was a case of last man or woman standing as we saw the searing heat wipe out championship tennis players one by one. Eventual singles winners Na Li and Stanislas Wawrinka were deserving of lifting their respective trophies, but the event showed that anything could happen.
Is it as exciting to watch the tournament sitting in the Rod Laver Arena as at home? Let’s just say that the atmosphere is unbelievable and Melbourne is an exceptionally welcoming city for tennis fans. Better book your tickets for next year fast!

Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park (March 2015)

Australian Grand PrixIf sports cars and motorsports are more your thing, Melbourne plays host to the first round of the Formula 1 World Championship in March 2015. As this is the first round of the Championship, it is a good chance to spot new, talented drivers coming into their own. In fact, the Australian Grand Prix played host to the debut of Lewis Hamilton, Jacques Villeneuve and Kimi Raikkonen to name but a few.
Although Melbourne did not always host the event, since hosting began in 1996, the citizens of Melbourne have embraced Formula 1 racing with open arms. As well as satisfying sports car enthusiasts with Ferrari displays, Porsche 911 GT3 racing and V8 Supercars; other exciting events around Albert Park this year included High Wire stunts and skateboarding with Tony Hawk. Awesome!
This year has seen not only a spectacular final event with eventual winner German Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg finishing in pole position, there was also controversy as Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo finished in second position but was disqualified after breaking fuel consumption rules. Perhaps you will be there in 2015 to see the Aussie driver redeem himself on home turf?
