Angel's Trip to Bordeaux
By Angel hayden
I had the opportunity to travel around the Bordeaux area by river cruise on the SS Bon Voyage courtesy of Uniworld, with stops at Blaye, Bourg, Cussac-fort-Medoc and Pauillac. We were all met by a Uniworld representative after our flight to Bordeaux airport and transferred to the docked ship 40 minutes away, where we were greeted by staff and showed to our cabins. This was a great beginning and we knew we were going to be pampered!
Location
The SS Bon Voyage is a beautiful ship, with an outside deck for lounging in the sun, a restaurant and bar, and cosy, comfortable state rooms. The Le Salon Champagne bar is so stylish and was inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s personal villa, and there are loads of lovely shaded areas on deck for dining outside.

What I Loved
I found the river cruise to be such a different and interesting experience. It was catered towards everyone, and you can do as little or as much as you want to with day trips and excursions, while food and drink are always on hand. The crew were so helpful and made everything really easy for us. As well as that, our trip to the small village of Saint Emilion with its underground church was wonderful. It was definitely difficult to choose a favourite part of this trip!

Activities & Places to See
- There a number of guided excursions available, such as a trip to Blaye Fortress overlooking the Gironde river, and to Medoc Vineyards for a bicycle ride.
- I really enjoyed our trip to the farmers’ market at Libourne, which had a great selection of locally sourced products.
- A day-trip to take in the beautiful city of Bordeaux is definitely worthwhile, as there are a number of historical buildings and streets to explore.

Shopping
I found Bordeaux to be a great city for shopping, with plenty of popular brands and clothes shops for every budget. Some of the shopping districts we visited were the Promenade Sainte Catherine and the Quai des Marques, both containing loads of different shops.

Food & Bars
We were right in the heart of wine country during our trip, and we even did a tour of a vineyard in Pauillac and in Chateau de Cazeneuve. Needless to say, the wine was terrific! We also did a delicious oyster tasting at Cussac-fort-Medoc. We were served dinner onboard the ship, and we also had the option of going into Bordeaux for food when we wanted. There were plenty of bars in the city, especially around the Rue Sainte-Catherine and the Place du Parlement.
