Corie's Trip to Cape Town

Cories Trip To Cape Town

Last year I travelled with my colleagues to Cape Town and spent 7 days enjoying this cultural city. We flew with Turkish Airlines from Dublin to Istanbul and from Istanbul to Cape Town. We got the chance to enjoy the new Istanbul Airport. We did some shopping and relaxed in the Turkish Business Lounge. From Cape Town Airport we took a taxi to the city centre, which took about 20 minutes.

Location

Cape Town is a vibrant destination. It is a city for nature lovers but at the same time it is a cosmopolitan city. There are plenty of restaurants, outdoors activities, bars, and entertainment on offer. We stayed in the 5 star One & Only Hotel which has an iconic view of Table Mountain. It is situated on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, close to the city center. This hotel has an amazing outdoor infinity pool, 3 restaurants offering many different cuisines, a luxury Spa for mind-body wellbeing and so much more. You can also book exciting activities at reception such as cape winelands tours or whale watching. It is a great hotel for couples and families.

What I Loved

I loved Table Mountain. It is so beautiful, I could have looked at it all day. I also enjoyed our visit to Stellenbosch city which is famous for its wine-tasting tours. Of course, the penguins at Boulders Beach were another highlight.

Activities & Places to See

  • Climb Table Mountain and admire the incredible flora and fauna, views, and unique wildlife.
  • Immerse yourself in an exciting whale-watching tour. Different companies organize a tour to Hermanus which is nicknamed “the Whale Capital”.
  • Travel to Stellenbosch which is roughly one hour from Cape Town. This cultural town is famous for its wine.
  • Be fascinated by Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. Many of the vibrant plants here are indigenous.
  • Visit Robben Island – the Prison (Drakenstein Correctional Centre) where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
  • Hang out with the penguins of Boulders Beach.

Shopping

Shopping in Cape Town is unique as there is a wide mix of African and western products on offer. V&A Waterfront Mall is home to many shops that suit all kinds of budgets, while Cape Quarter & Greenmarket Square are the perfect places to find handmade souvenirs & jewellery.

Food & Bars

We had dinner in Rubens in the One & Only Hotel most nights. They have a fantastic menu and great service. We also enjoyed some delicious traditional African dishes in the Gold Restaurant which can be found in Cape Town city centre.

Beaches

Clifton Beaches are a stretch of 4 beaches along the Atlantic seaboard. This is the perfect place to relax. There are also many activities to choose from such as surfing and volleyball. The beaches have good facilities to buy drinks and snacks too. A trip to South Africa is not complete without visiting the penguins of Boulders Beach – False Bay. This beach is in an area of the Table Mountain national park which protects different animals including the African Penguins. If you are lucky enough you might even get the chance to swim with them, but do not disturb them!
