Gemma's Trip to St Lucia
By Gemma Hughes
I was fortunate enough to attend an educational trip to the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia hosted by the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority and Virgin Atlantic.
Location
Saint Lucia is nestled halfway down the Eastern Caribbean archipelago. Known as the “Helen of the West Indies,” Saint Lucia is famed for its natural beauty and diverse attractions, including the signature Piton Mountains – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tropical rainforests and the Caribbean’s only drive-through volcanoes.
What I Loved
The itinerary was jam packed and included tours of some of St. Lucia’s wide range of accommodations from world-class 5 star resorts and boutique hotels as well as a range of activities from thrilling ziplining to a mud bath experience at Sulphur Springs.
Activities & Places to See
I would highly recommend a visit to the Soufrier Volcano (Sulphur Springs). It last erupted in the 1700's - over 200 years ago - and is considered to be a dormant. One of the best features of the volcano is the ability to dive into the mud baths which is what we did, and it was a great experience. I rewound the clock as apparently they make you look 12 years younger! Babonneau is an incredible spot for ziplining through the rainforest. Guests can explore scenic nature trails, ascend through the forest canopy on gondolas, or embrace the thrill of soaring between platforms on a zip line, gliding high above the lush rainforest. There's a range of activities on offer, with something to suit every visitor. Our group was booked for the Adrenaline zip line tour, which is definitely not for the faint of heart! The tour starts with a short walk through a peaceful part of the tropical rainforest and then ramps up quickly. There are 16 platforms set high up in the trees and 8 zip lines connecting the platforms for a thrilling adventure through the wilderness of St Lucia. The adventure takes about 2 hours.Shopping & Culture
We got the chance to immerse ourselves in the local culture of St Lucia with a visit to the Gros Islet Street Party, which was an amazing mix of energy and excitement. Pumping music, balmy Caribbean sea air, fruity tropical cocktails, street food, market stalls with artisan crafts and local produce – this party had it all! It was a great way to explore the locality and shop or party till the wee hours and is a common tourist ritual on a Friday evening.
