Joanna's Trip to Madeira

I recently travelled to Madeira, a beautiful archipelago in Portugal. I flew direct with Ryanair from Dublin to Funchal, which is where I stayed. From Funchal Airport, it was only approximately a 15 minute drive into the city centre.

Location

During my trip to Madeira I stayed in Funchal, which is Madeira’s capital city. It’s a beautiful location with plenty to offer for visitors. The first hotel I stayed at was the Melia Madeira Mare Hotel. I really liked this hotel, as it was centrally located and the Old Town was only a 15-20 minute walk away. I also stayed at the Quinta Da Bela Vista hotel in the hills overlooking Funchal. This hotel is situated within 2 hectares of botanical gardens with a traditional farm feel.

What I Loved

I really enjoyed everything about my holiday to Madeira. It’s a unique holiday destination with plenty to see and do, as well as lots of activities to try. The island is beautifully lush island and offers picturesque surroundings to enjoy a relaxing holiday in.

Activities & Places to See

• Go on a food & wine tour of Funchal. This took about 3 hours and was a walking tour around Funchal town with 8 pit stops where we got to try local food & wine.
• Tour the island on a luxury Catamaran yacht tours, which offer private sunset cruises, private whale watching tours & full day Charters.
• Madeira Mountain Expedition offer adventure jeep safari tours to Funchal National Park and the surrounding areas.
• Try out the Funchal cable car & toboggan ride.

Shopping

There are plenty of shops around Funchal Old Town which are the perfect place to pick up a souvenir of your holiday in Madeira.

Food & Bars

I tried out a few restaurants during my stay in Madeira and they were all very enjoyable. Many offered authentic Portuguese food and wines which were really tasty. Some of my favourite restaurants were Chalet Vicente, Peixaria no Mercado and Maktub in Paul Do Mar.
