Maura's Trip to Marrakesh

Mauras Trip To Marrakesh

My boyfriend and I flew with Ryanair to Marrakech to spend a weekend in the charming “Red City”. We took the early flight out and late flight home to spend as much time as possible in this enchanting city. As soon as we stepped off the plane, we instantly loved the atmosphere. There were fruit trees everywhere and the vibrant colours were amazing. We then took a taxi from Marrakech Airport to Medina, which took about 20 minutes.

Location

We stayed in the splendid 5 star Kenzi Menara Palace, just ten minutes from the city’s most famous square, Jamaa El Fna Square. There was also a free shuttle bus into Medina. The hotel has a Moroccan style with a modern feel. The backdrop of the Atlas mountains created a magical atmosphere. The staff were also incredibly friendly.

What I Loved

Marrakesh is a fabulous place to visit for a weekend. We loved the amazing food, the good weather and the Jemaa El Fna Square. We particularly loved admiring the views from a rooftop bar and listening to the traditional music.

Activities & Places to See

  • Jjemaa el-Fna Square is the main square and it is a must visit. It is beautiful in the morning but amazing in the early evening too when the square starts to come alive with markets, musicians and snake charmers.
  • If you love fashion you cannot miss the Yves Saint Laurent Museum which has stunning collections and exhibitions.
  • Jardin Majorelle is a wonderful garden with many colorful exotic plants and Art Deco paintings.
  • Experience Medina’s souks. However, I do recommend taking a guided tour as it is very easy to get lost in Medina due to its many narrow streets.
  • El Badi and El Bahia Palace are two magnificent Moroccan palaces that cannot be missed.
  • Visit the Mosque of Koutoubia, the biggest mosque in the city.

Shopping

Marrakesh is a haven for shopping; here you can purchase traditional products like spices, jewellery, ceramics, fabrics, and soap. Of course, do not miss the souk!

Food & Bars

We ate mostly in the hotel, but we did go into Marrakesh too. Every corner has a nice restaurant. Just explore the area and immerse yourself in the Moroccan cuisine. We tried La Table Du Rian @ 72. This is a fabulous restaurant with a rooftop option that we availed of; they serve Moroccan & Mediterranean food.
