Sarah's Trip to Morocco

Sarahs Trip To Morocco Macro

I recently had the opportunity to be a part of Exodus Travel's 50th Anniversary Mega FAM Trip for travel agents. We were given options of 4 different itineraries. I chose the Northern Highlights itinerary that started in Casablanca & had stops in Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes & Marrakech.

Location

I flew from Dublin to Casablanca with a stopover in Paris with Air France. It took about 40 minutes to get from Casablanca Airport to the town centre. Morocco is a beautiful destination with varied landscapes across the country. The northern parts are lush & green with weather determined by the mediterranean climate. As you work you way south from Fes to Marrakech it gets drier & more desert like as you head into the Sahara region.

What I Loved

I especially loved the Moroccan architecture. The beautiful tilework & intricately carved plaster & doors are so interesting. Each city we visited has its own identity that differentiates them from the next. The people were also very happy & friendly, which made the experience more fulfilling.

Activities & Places to See

  • Visit Tangier, a wonderful beachside city which has a lovely medina to explore & a great marina with restaurants & long promenade for easy walks.
  • See Chefchaouen, known as Morocco’s blue city, where buildings in the medina are painted in various shades of blue. The Spanish Mosque has great sunset views.
  • Head to the cultural capital of Morocco, Fes. Here, you'll find the oldest walled medina in the world.
  • Marrakech medina & main square are worth visiting for shopping & to experience local daily life. In the Kasbah area the Saadian Tombs & the Bahia Palace are well worth visiting for their beautiful architecture.

Shopping & Culture

The Medinas are fabulous for shopping. Some of the most popular purchases in Morocco include spices, leather products, argan oil, Moroccan & Berber jewellery, Moroccan tile items & pottery. Cafes are generally the gathering places in the evenings. In more cosmopolitan cities like Casablanca, Tangier, Fes & Marrakech there are nightclubs.

Restaurants & Bars

There are many dry restaurants in Morocco (no alcohol served), however there are others that do serve alcoholic beverages (mainly beer & wine).
