Vanessa's trip to Istanbul

By Vanessa Holohan

Istanbul 1

Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city and its economic, cultural, and historical centre, with a population exceeding 15 million - around 18% of the country’s total. It is one of the largest cities not only in Europe, but in the world! The city uniquely spans two continents, with about two-thirds of its residents in Europe and the rest in Asia. Istanbul sits on the Bosphorus River, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, and enjoys a Mediterranean climate.

Location

I stayed in Istanbul’s Old City, which is rich with cultural influences from past empires. In the Sultanahmet district, the Roman-era Hippodrome once hosted chariot races and still features ancient Egyptian obelisks. The iconic Hagia Sophia, a Byzantine masterpiece, boasts a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics, reflecting the city’s deep historical and religious heritage. I flew direct from Dublin to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. The flight time was approximately 4.5 hours, and it then took me about 45 minutes to get from the airport to the city.

What I Loved

I loved visiting the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, a true shopper’s paradise with around 4,000 shops all housed under one vast roof. The market is so extensive and full of variety that people say it would take four full days just to walk around and explore every corner. From spices and textiles to jewellery and souvenirs, the Grand Bazaar offers an unforgettable experience for anyone who enjoys shopping and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. It truly is one of Istanbul’s most iconic attractions.

Activities & Places to See

  • Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque - Originally a Byzantine cathedral, later a mosque, and now a stunning museum showcasing incredible architecture and history.
  • The Blue Mosque - Famous for its striking blue tiles and six minarets, this active mosque is a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture.
  • Galata Tower - A medieval stone tower offering panoramic views over Istanbul’s skyline and the Bosphorus.
  • Cruise on the Bosphorus River - Enjoy a scenic boat trip between Europe and Asia, passing under iconic bridges and alongside beautiful waterfront palaces.
  • Topkapi Palace - The opulent former residence of Ottoman sultans, filled with treasures and historical artefacts.

Shopping & Culture

Istanbul offers a vibrant fusion of East and West, where ancient traditions meet modern trends. The city’s bustling bazaars, like the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, offer plenty of colours and scents to delight your senses, while upscale malls and designer boutiques in districts like Nişantaşı and Zorlu Center reflect a cosmopolitan flair. With art galleries, street performances, and historic landmarks which add to the city's cultural depth, there's something special here for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

Restaurants & Bars

Istanbul is home to many rooftop restaurants and bars that offer stunning views of the city. Among the best are Roof Mezze and Izaka Terrace, both popular for their delicious food, great atmosphere, and breathtaking panoramas. Whether you want to enjoy a relaxed meal or sip cocktails while watching the sunset, these spots provide the perfect setting to take in Istanbul’s beautiful skyline.
