Vanessa's trip to Marrakesh
By Vanessa Holohan
I visited Marrakesh, one of the most popular destinations for tourism in Morocco, and the surrounding areas of this vast city. The population is currently just over 1 million, and has grown rapidly when compared with 1950 when the population was just over 250,000. I flew Aer Lingus direct to Marrakesh with a flight time of around 3 and a half hours, but Ryanair also have a direct route too. Transfer time from the airport is roughly 20 minutes, however the traffic is crazy around the city so can take longer depending on the time of the day.
Location
Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, is a major economic centre and is home to mosques, palaces and gardens. The medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire, with maze-like alleys where thriving souks sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewellery. A symbol of the city, and visible for miles, is the Moorish minaret of 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque. Marrakesh is truly the city of contrasts.
What I Loved
I got the chance to go on a hot air balloon ride, which was a bucket-list item of mine and I absolutely loved it! While drifting 1,000 feet in the sky, you get a great view of the landscape and the Berber villages.
Activities & Places to See
- The Medina is the historic old city of Marrakesh, and from above it resembles a vast, intricate beehive. Its maze-like alleys are filled with vibrant street life and endless things to discover.
- Some of the most luxurious accommodation in the world can be found in Marrakesh. Many riads offer exquisite interiors and peaceful, hidden courtyards, so I'd definitely recommend staying here during your visit.
- Enjoy a traditional Moroccan hammam for a truly authentic and relaxing experience. It's a unique way to unwind and connect with local culture.
- Explore the medina’s magnificent palaces, bustling souks, and historic mosques. Each one offers a glimpse into Marrakesh’s rich and colourful past.
- I would recommend a horse drawn carriage tour of the city as this will give you a chance to absorb the sights and sounds of this amazing culture.
Shopping & Culture
There is so much to see and do in Marrakesh, from early morning until late at night. The city is alive with colour, energy, and culture at every hour. I’d recommend spending three nights and four days to truly take it all in. This gives you time to explore the medina, relax in a hammam, and enjoy the local cuisine. You’ll leave feeling enriched, inspired, and already planning your return.
Restaurants & Bars
My favourite restaurant was Dar Soukkar. Not only did this venue offer a wide range of incredible food, but the entertainment was also next level. Performers constantly circled the venue singing and dancing which added to an already vibrant atmosphere. If you're looking for an exciting night out, I would definitely recommend here!
